Dear RCC Supporter, Right now, the Biden Administration has a limited window to pass as many environmental regulations and laws as they can before Donald Trump becomes our 47th president. One critical step the Biden administration’s current EPA can take now is banning toxic, dangerous chemicals, especially paraquat. Paraquat is an herbicide often used for weed and grass control. Exposure to this toxic organic compound is most common through the ingestion of paraquat or eating produce that has been treated with herbicides that contain paraquat. Paraquat is officially recognized as highly poisonous, but its use is still permitted in certain settings. It is one of the most widely used herbicides registered in the US, though exposure to the toxicant has been linked to significant health issues, including brain damage, Parkinson’s disease, and cancer. It is banned in more than 70 countries. The US needs to ban it entirely. After years of hearing arguments for its complete discontinuation, the Environmental Protection Agency is now reviewing evidence of paraquat’s potential side effects -- of brain damage and other health problems -- and considering implementing a full nationwide ban. Their deadline is January 17 – three days before inauguration. We need to get them over the finish line before the administration changes. While the administration is still on our side, will you join thousands of advocates in telling the White House that the EPA must ban paraquat NOW? Sign the petition here. | |
