The administration handed 180 big polluters a free pass to poison the air.
An email was all it took.

For the first time in U.S. history, the Trump administration has invoked an obscure Clean Air Act provision to exempt over 180 industrial facilities from toxic pollution rules, with no scientific review, no public process, and no congressional oversight.

The executive branch simply set up an EPA email inbox inviting industrial companies to request exemptions from Clean Air Act rules, which they’ve granted en masse.

This means:

• 180+ facilities exempted
• 38 states and Puerto Rico affected
• 2-year exemptions granted to nearly ⅓ of all coal-fired power plants and ¼ of chemical manufacturers
• 250,000 Americans living within one mile of an exempted facility
• 54% of those residents are people of color

Fortunately, the No Passes for Polluters Act, introduced by Senators Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) and Adam Schiff (D-CA), would permanently close the loophole and require Congressional intent to unilaterally exempt polluters.
